Philip Howson's art is never achieved using digital imagery or masking tape and is renowned for its crisp hard-edged lines and clever use of vibrant colour.

Using acrylics and vinyl on canvas and board, his colourful and sophisticated geometric forms, achieve huge diversity. Resulting in stunningly visual artworks, that cannot fail to attract attention, that often play tricks with the senses! And when displayed are always a point of much discussion!

In 2003, following a successful period in business, in the NW of England, along with my wife Justine, we decided to make the move to Cornwall with our two young boys, Guy and  Sam. I have had associations with the county for many years and we felt it was the time to make the break to provide a better life for us all.

We live in a lovely village in an area of outstanding natural beauty on the south coast of the county on the Fal river and are never far from the water, either on it, in it, or walking our cheeky border collie Ned in countryside. I love nature and the outdoor life and having grown up in the industrial northwest, I never take our beautiful surroundings for granted!

I have a keen interest in art and history, and a liking of interior design. I especially like to bring antiques and art into very contemporary settings, something that if done well can have stunning results!

“Maths is the basis of life. In geometry, it becomes both visual and tangible and has always been intrinsic within our lives as humans. Geometry is everywhere, millions of man-made objects are an amalgam of geometric shapes, mostly we see the sum of the parts, we do not see or explore the shapes that make them! My art unwraps geometry and shapes it into my ever changing expression of random form.”

— Philip Howson

I use many colours, both complementary and sometimes strongly clashing, to give maximum impact!

When I conceive an idea it is first planned on paper and then onto board or canvas, however it constantly evolves and changes as the artwork progresses.

I am a self-taught artist. For years, I have strongly admired the works of the famous pre/post-war Cornish Modernist abstract artists, like Ben Nicholson and Peter Lanyon.

A few years ago, I attended an exhibition of George Dannatt's works, and I was inspired to paint then.

I don’t like to pigeon hole what I do, or copy styles! However my art is influenced by Abstract Modernism, Bauhaus and Concrete art, resulting in my own unique interpretation of “Modernist Geometric Abstraction”.
